The beginning of Slum School!
Friday afternoon saw the pilot of the slum schooling project from Revelation Life take place. Whilst I am heading up the project, everyone in the team helped out and made the afternoon hugely enjoyable for everyone – kids, mamas and us too :-)
The project is being run in Katogo 2 at present, although it may progress to Banda slum too in time. The other two slums, Kasubi and Katogo 1, (Katogo 1 and 2 make up Kina slum), have either got sponsorship programs running to help the children go to school or soon will have.
The idea is to provide the basic literacy and numeracy for children who can not afford to go to school, or who are waiting whilst older brothers and sisters attend. They will then be able to at least write their own name and use the money system. For others, they may be able to join a school year closer to their own age group and reduce the number of years parents/carers have to pay.
The afternoon kicked off with a little number work with understanding the number 1 and writing it out a few times. Then we moved on to the phonic ‘ssss’ with lots of fun being snakes and a great ’see-saw’ story read by Moses. There was lots of colouring too.
Interestingly, the standards ranged greatly, from the very young who had fun scribbling on the sheets to the older ones who wrote out lots of numbers and letters – way beyond the lesson. It will be a challenge to cater for the broad range, but it is turning into a hugely rewarding experience too!
